MICRO & NANO SELF ASSEMBLY METHODS: In self-assembly processes a disordered system of pre-existing components forms an organized structure or pattern as a consequence of specific, local interactions among the components, without external direction. The self-assembling components experience only local interactions and typically obey a simple set of rules that govern how they combine. Even though this phenomenon is scale-independent and can be utilized for self-constructing and manufacturing systems at nearly every scale, our focus is on micro self assembly and nano self assembly. For building microscopic devices, one of the most promising ideas is to exploit the process of self-assembly. Complex structures can be created by combining building blocks under natural circumstances. To give an example, a method is established for micro assembly of multiple batches of micro components onto a single substrate. The substrate is prepared with hydrophobic coated gold binding sites. To perform micro assembly, a hydrocarbon oil is applied to the substrate and wets exclusively the hydrophobic binding sites in water. Micro components are then added to the water, and assembled on the oil-wetted binding sites. Even more, micro assembly can be controlled to take place on desired binding sites by using an electrochemical method to deactivate specific substrate binding sites. By repeatedly applying this technique, different batches of micro components can be sequentially assembled to a single substrate. After the micro assembly procedure, electroplating takes place to establish electrical connections for micro assembled components. STOCHASTIC MICRO ASSEMBLY: In parallel micro assembly, where parts are assembled simultaneously, there is deterministic and stochastic micro assembly. In the deterministic micro assembly, the relationship between the part and its destination on the substrate is known in advance. In the stochastic micro assembly on the other hand, this relationship is unknown or random. Parts do self-assemble in stochastic processes driven by some motive force. In order for the micro self-assembly to take place, there need to be bonding forces, the bonding needs to occur selectively, and micro assembling parts need to be able to move so they can get together. Stochastic micro assembly is many times accompanied by vibrations, electrostatic, microfluidic or other forces that act on the components. Stochastic micro assembly is especially useful when the building blocks are smaller, because the handling of the individual components becomes more of a challenge. Stochastic self-assembly can be observed in nature as well. MICROMECHANICAL FASTENERS: At the micro scale, conventional types of fasteners like screws and hinges will not easily work due to present fabrication constraints and large friction forces. Micro snap fasteners on the other hand work more easily in micro assembly applications. Micro snap fasteners are deformable devices consisting of pairs of mating surfaces that snap together during micro assembly. Because of the simple and linear assembly motion, snap fasteners have a wide range of applications in micro assembly operations, such as devices with multiple or layered components, or micro opto-mechanical plugs, sensors with memory. Other micro assembly fasteners are “key-lock” joints and “inter-lock” joints. Key-lock joints consist of the insertion of a “key” on one micro-part, into a mating slot on another micro-part. Locking into position is achieved by translating the first micro-part within the other. Inter-lock joints are created by the perpendicular insertion of one micro-part with a slit, into another micro-part with a slit. The slits create an interference fit and are permanent once the micro-parts are joined. ADHESIVE MICROMECHANICAL FASTENING: Adhesive mechanical fastening is used to construct 3D micro devices. The fastening process includes self-alignment mechanisms and adhesive bonding. Self-alignment mechanisms are deployed in adhesive micro assembly to increase the positioning accuracy. A micro probe bonded to a robotic micromanipulator picks up and accurately deposits adhesive to target locations. Curing light hardens the adhesive. The cured adhesive keeps the micro assembled parts into their positions and provides strong mechanical joints. Using conductive adhesive, a reliable electrical connection can be obtained. The adhesive mechanical fastening only requires simple operations, and can result in reliable connections and high positioning accuracies, which are important in automatic microassembly. These are: BOOSTER REGULATORS: They save money and energy by increasing the main line pressure by multiple times while also protecting downstream systems from pressure fluctuations. The pneumatic booster regulator, when connected to an air supply line, multiplies pressure and the main air supply pressure may be set low. Desired pressure increases and output pressures can be easily adjusted. Pneumatic booster regulators boost local line pressures without requiring additional power by 2 to 4 times. The use of pressure boosters is particularly recommended when the pressure in a system needs to be selectively increased. A system or sections of it do not have to be supplied with excessively high pressure, because this would lead to substantially higher operating costs. Pressure boosters can also be used for mobile pneumatics. An initial low pressure can be generated using relatively small compressors, and then reinforced with the help of the booster. Keep in mind however that pressure boosters are not a replacement for compressors. Some of our pressure boosters require no other source than compressed air. Pressure boosters are classified as twin-piston pressure boosters and are intended for compressing air. The basic variant of the booster consists of a double piston system and a directional control valve for continuous operation. These boosters double the input pressure automatically. It is not possible to adjust the pressure to lower values. Pressure boosters which also have a pressure regulator can boost pressures to less than double the set value. In this case the pressure regulator reduces the pressure in the outside chambers. Pressure boosters cannot vent themselves, the air can only flow in one direction. Therefore pressure boosters cannot necessarily be used in a working line between valves and cylinders. To select the right pressure sensor for a specific application, besides the pressure range, the type of pressure measurement has to be considered. Pressure sensors measure a certain pressure in comparison to a reference pressure and can be categorized into 1.) Absolute 2.) gage and 3.) differential devices. Absolute piezoresistive pressure sensors measure the pressure relative to a high vacuum reference sealed behind its sensing diaphragm (in practice referred to as Absolute Pressure). The vacuum is negligible compared to the pressure to be measured. Gage Pressure is measured relative to the ambient atmospheric pressure. Changes in the atmospheric pressure due to weather conditions or altitude influence the output of a gage pressure sensor. A gage pressure higher than ambient pressure is referred to as positive pressure. If the gage pressure is below the atmospheric pressure, it is called negative or vacuum gage pressure. According to its quality, vacuum can be categorized into different ranges such as low, high and ultra high vacuum. Gage pressure sensors only offer one pressure port. The ambient air pressure is directed through a vent hole or a vent tube to the back side of the sensing element and thus compensated. Differential pressure is the difference between any two process pressures p1 and p2. Because of this, differential pressure sensors must offer two separate pressure ports with connections. Our amplified pressure sensors are able to measure positive and negative pressure differences, corresponding to p1>p2 and p1p2) and the higher pressure has to be applied to the pressure port defined as ''high pressure port''. Another class of gauges available are Flow Meters. Systems requiring continuous monitoring of flow use in general electronic flow sensors rather than flow meters, which require no power. Electronic flow sensors can use a variety of sensing elements to generate an electronic signal proportional to the flow. The signal is then sent to an electronic display panel or control circuit. However, flow sensors produce no visual indication of flow by themselves, and they need some source of external power to transmit a signal to an analog or digital display. Self-contained flow meters, on the other hand, rely on the dynamics of flow to provide a visual indication of it. Flow meters operate on the principle of dynamic pressure. Because measured flow depends on fluid dynamics, changes in a fluid's physical properties can affect flow readings. This is due to the fact that a flow meter is calibrated to a fluid having a certain specific gravity within a range of viscosities. Wide variations in temperatures can change a hydraulic fluid's specific gravity and viscosity. FEEDTHROUGHS: These are generally electrical conductors or optical fibers used to carry a signal through an enclosure, chamber, vessel or interface. Feedthroughs can be divided into power and instrumentation categories. Power feedthroughs carry either high currents or high voltages. Instrumentation feedthroughs on the other hand are used to carry electrical signals, such as thermocouples, which are generally low current or voltage. Lastly, RF-feedthroughs are designed to carry very high frequency RF or microwave electrical signals. A feedthrough electrical connection may have to withstand considerable pressure difference across its length. Systems that operate under high vacuum, like vacuum chambers require electrical connections through the vessel. Submersible vehicles also require feedthrough connections between exterior instruments and devices and the controls within the vehicle pressure hull. Hermetically sealed feedthroughs are frequently used for instrumentation, high amperage and voltage, coaxial, thermocouple and fiber optic applications. Fiber optic feedthroughs transmit fiber optical signals through the interfaces. Mechanical feedthroughs transmit mechanical motion from one side of the interface (for example from the outside of the pressure chamber) to the other side (to the inside of the pressure chamber). DIFFERENTIAL SCANNING CALORIMETERS (DSC) : A technique in which the difference in the amount of heat required to increase the temperature of a sample and reference is measured as a function of temperature. Both the sample and reference are maintained at nearly the same temperature throughout the experiment. The temperature program for a DSC analysis is established so that the sample holder temperature increases linearly as a function of time. The reference sample has a well-defined heat capacity over the range of temperatures to be scanned. DSC experiments provide as a result a curve of heat flux versus temperature or versus time. Differential scanning calorimeters are frequently used to study what happens to polymers when they're heated. The thermal transitions of a polymer can be studied using this technique. Thermal transitions are changes that take place in a polymer when they are heated. The melting of a crystalline polymer is an example. The glass transition is also a thermal transition. In this technique it is the heat flow to the sample and reference that remains the same instead of the temperature. When the sample and reference are heated identically, phase changes and other thermal processes cause a difference in temperature between the sample and reference. DSC measures the energy required to keep both the reference and the sample at the same temperature whereas DTA measures the difference in temperature between the sample and the reference when they are both put under the same heat. So they are similar techniques. THERMOMECHANICAL ANALYZER (TMA) : The TMA reveals the change in the dimensions of a sample as a function of temperature. One can regard TMA as a very sensitive micrometer. The TMA is a device that allows precise measurements of position and can be calibrated against known standards. A temperature control system consisting of a furnace, heat sink and a thermocouple surrounds the samples. Quartz, invar or ceramic fixtures hold the samples during tests. TMA measurements record changes caused by changes in the free volume of a polymer. Changes in free volume are volumetric changes in the polymer caused by the absorption or release of heat associated with that change; the loss of stiffness; increased flow; or by the change in relaxation time. The free volume of a polymer is known to be related to viscoelasticity, aging, penetration by solvents, and impact properties. The glass transition temperature Tg in a polymer corresponds to the expansion of the free volume allowing greater chain mobility above this transition. Seen as an inflection or bending in the thermal expansion curve, this change in the TMA can be seen to cover a range of temperatures. The glass transition temperature Tg is calculated by an agreed upon method. Perfect agreement is not immediately witnessed in the value of the Tg when comparing different methods, however if we carefully examine the agreed upon methods in determining the Tg values then we understand that there is actually good agreement. Besides its absolute value, the width of the Tg is also an indicator of changes in the material. TMA is a relatively simple technique to carry out. TMA is often used for measuring Tg of materials such as highly cross-linked thermoset polymers for which the Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) is difficult to use. In addition to Tg, the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) is obtained from thermomechanical analysis. The CTE is calculated from the linear sections of the TMA curves. Another useful result the TMA can provide us is finding out the orientation of crystals or fibers. Composite materials may have three distinct thermal expansion coefficients in the x, y and z directions. By recording the CTE in x, y and z directions one may understand in which direction fibers or crystals are predominantly oriented. To measure the bulk expansion of the material a technique called DILATOMETRY can be used. The sample is immersed in a fluid such as silicon oil or Al2O3 powder in the dilatometer, run thru the temperature cycle and the expansions in all directions are converted to a vertical movement, which is measured by the TMA. Modern thermomechanical analyzers make this easy for users. If a pure liquid is used, the dilatometer is filled with that liquid instead of the silicon oil or alumina oxide. Using diamond TMA the users can run stress strain curves, stress relaxation experiments, creep-recovery and dynamic mechanical temperature scans. The TMA is an indispensible test equipment for industry and research. THERMOGRAVIMETRIC ANALYZERS ( TGA ) : Thermogravimetric Analysis is a technique where the mass of a substance or specimen is monitored as a function of temperature or time. The sample specimen is subjected to a controlled temperature program in a controlled atmosphere. The TGA measures a sample’s weight as it is heated or cooled in its furnace. A TGA instrument consists of a sample pan that is supported by a precision balance. That pan resides in a furnace and is heated or cooled during the test. The mass of the sample is monitored during the test. Sample environment is purged with an inert or a reactive gas. Thermogravimetric analyzers can quantify loss of water, solvent, plasticizer, decarboxylation, pyrolysis, oxidation, decomposition, weight % filler material, and weight % ash. Depending on the case, information may be obtained upon heating or cooling. A typical TGA thermal curve is displayed from left to right. If the TGA thermal curve descends, it indicates a weight loss. Modern TGAs are capable of conducting isothermal experiments. Sometimes the user may want to use a reactive sample purge gases, such as oxygen. When using oxygen as a purge gas user may want to switch gases from nitrogen to oxygen during the experiment. This technique is frequently used to identify the percent carbon in a material. Thermogravimetric analyzer can be used to compare two similar products, as a quality control tool to ensure products meet their material specifications, to ensure products meet safety standards, to determine carbon content, identifying counterfeit products, to identify safe operating temperatures in various gases, to enhance product formulation processes, to reverse engineer a product. Finally it is worth mentioning that combinations of a TGA with a GC/MS are available. GC is short for Gas Chromatography and MS is short for Mass Spectrometry. DYNAMIC MECHANICAL ANALYZER ( DMA) : This is a technique where a small sinusoidal deformation is applied to a sample of known geometry in a cyclic manner. The materials response to stress, temperature, frequency and other values is then studied. The sample can be subjected to a controlled stress or a controlled strain. For a known stress, the sample will deform a certain amount, depending on its stiffness. DMA measures stiffness and damping, these are reported as modulus and tan delta. Because we are applying a sinusoidal force, we can express the modulus as an in-phase component (the storage modulus), and an out of phase component (the loss modulus). The storage modulus, either E’ or G’, is the measure of the sample’s elastic behavior. The ratio of the loss to the storage is the tan delta and is called damping. It is considered a measure of the energy dissipation of a material. Damping varies with the state of the material, its temperature, and with the frequency. DMA is sometimes called DMTA standing for DYNAMIC MECHANICAL THERMAL ANALYZER. Thermomechanical Analysis applies a constant static force to a material and records the material dimensional changes as temperature or time varies. The DMA on the other hand, applies an oscillatory force at a set frequency to the sample and reports changes in stiffness and damping. DMA data provides us modulus information whereas the TMA data gives us the coefficient of thermal expansion. Both techniques detect transitions, but DMA is much more sensitive. Modulus values change with temperature and transitions in materials can be seen as changes in the E’ or tan delta curves. This includes glass transition, melting and other transitions that occur in the glassy or rubbery plateau which are indicators of subtle changes in the material. THERMAL IMAGING INSTRUMENTS, INFRARED THERMOGRAPHERS, INFRARED CAMERAS : These are devices that form an image using infrared radiation. Standard everyday cameras form images using visible light in the 450–750 nanometer wavelength range. Infrared cameras however operate in the infrared wavelength range as long as 14,000 nm. Generally, the higher an object's temperature, the more infrared radiation is emitted as black-body radiation. Infrared cameras work even in total darkness. Images from most infrared cameras have a single color channel because the cameras generally use an image sensor that does not distinguish different wavelengths of infrared radiation. To differentiate wavelengths color image sensors require a complex construction. In some test instruments these monochromatic images are displayed in pseudo-color, where changes in color are used rather than changes in intensity to display changes in the signal. The brightest (warmest) parts of images are customarily colored white, intermediate temperatures are colored red and yellow, and the dimmest (coolest) parts are colored black. A scale is generally shown next to a false color image to relate colors to temperatures. Thermal cameras have resolutions considerably lower than that of optical cameras, with values in the neighborhood of 160 x 120 or 320 x 240 pixels. More expensive infrared cameras can achieve a resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels. There are two main categories of thermographic cameras: COOLED INFRARED IMAGE DETECTOR SYSTEMS and UNCOOLED INFRARED IMAGE DETECTOR SYSTEMS. Cooled thermographic cameras have detectors contained in a vacuum-sealed case and are cryogenically cooled. The cooling is necessary for the operation of the semiconductor materials used. Without cooling, these sensors would be flooded by their own radiation. Cooled infrared cameras are however expensive. Cooling requires much energy and is time-consuming, requiring several minutes of cooling time prior to working. Although the cooling apparatus is bulky and expensive, cooled infrared cameras offer users superior image quality compared to uncooled cameras. The better sensitivity of cooled cameras allows the use of lenses with higher focal length. Bottled nitrogen gas can be used for cooling. Uncooled thermal cameras use sensors operating at ambient temperature, or sensors stabilized at a temperature close to ambient using temperature control elements. Uncooled infrared sensors are not cooled to low temperatures and therefore do not require bulky and expensive cryogenic coolers. Their resolution and image quality however is lower as compared to cooled detectors. Thermographic cameras offer many opportunities. Overheating spots is power lines can be located and repaired. Whereas fiberscopes are limited to a range of 6 to 8 inches, borescopes can provide a wider and clearer view as compared to fiberscopes. OPTICAL MICROSCOPES : These optical instruments use visible light (or UV light in the case of fluorescence microscopy) to produce an image. Optical lenses are used to refract the light. The first microscopes that were invented were optical. Optical microscopes can be further subdivided into several categories. We focus our attention to two of them: 1.) BORESCOPES / BOROSCOPES : A borescope is an optical device consisting of a rigid or flexible tube with an eyepiece on one end, and an objective lens on the other end linked together by a light transmitting optical system in between. Optical fibers surrounding the system are generally used for illuminating the object to be viewed. An internal image of the illuminated object is formed by the objective lens, magnified by the eyepiece and presented to the viewer's eye. Many modern borescopes can be fitted with imaging and video devices. Borescopes are used similar to fiberscopes for visual inspection where the area to be inspected is inaccessible by other means. Borescopes are considered nondestructive test instruments for viewing and examining defects and imperfections. The areas of application is only limited by your imagination. The term FLEXIBLE BORESCOPE is sometimes used interchangeably with the term fiberscope. One disadvantage for flexible borescopes originates from pixelation and pixel crosstalk due to the fiber image guide. Image quality varies widely among different models of flexible borescopes depending on the number of fibers and construction used in the fiber image guide. High end borescopes offer a visual grid on image captures that aids in evaluating the size of the area under inspection. For flexible borescopes, articulation mechanism components, range of articulation, field of view and angles of view of the objective lens are also important. Fiber content in the flexible relay is also critical to provide the highest possible resolution. Minimal quantity is 10,000 pixels while the best images are obtained with higher numbers of fibers in the 15,000 to 22,000 pixels range for the larger diameter borescopes. The ability to control the light at the end of the insertion tube allows the user to make adjustments that can significantly improve the clarity of images taken. On the other hand, RIGID BORESCOPES generally provide a superior image and lower cost compared to a flexible borescope. The shortcoming of rigid borescopes is the limitation that access to what is to be viewed must be in a straight line. Therefore, rigid borescopes have a limited area of application. For similar-quality instruments, the largest rigid borescope that will fit the hole gives the best image. A VIDEO BORESCOPE is similar to the flexible borescope but uses a miniature video camera at the end of the flexible tube. The end of the insertion tube includes a light which makes it possible to capture video or still images deep within the area of investigation. The ability of video borescopes to capture video and still images for later inspection is very useful. Viewing position can be changed via a joystick control and displayed on the screen mounted on its handle. Because the complex optical waveguide is replaced with an inexpensive electrical cable, video borescopes can be much less costly and potentially offer better resolution.
