Therefore having presence in one of the logistically key locations is very important for every engineering integrator and custom manufacturer willing to collaborate and partner with us. Logistics is a complex issue we constantly work on and keep improving. As an example, sometimes the best option is to ship a product as individual components and parts from one or several plants to an assembly plant that is in the vicinity of our customer. This saves on shipping cost because the final product may be large and bulky and the final assembly plant being close to customer will keep shipping prices to a minimum and at the same time be a safer option where the most value is put into the product that is shipped only a short distance to its final destination. • Nanomanufacturing, Nanoparticles, Nanotubes, Nanocomposites, CNT

Nanomanufacturing - Nanoparticles - Nanotubes - Nanocomposites - Nanophase Ceramics - CNT - AGS-TECH Inc. - New Mexico Nanoscale Manufacturing / Nanomanufacturing Our nanometer length scale parts and products are produced using NANOSCALE MANUFACTURING / NANOMANUFACTURING. This area is still in its infancy, but holds great promises for the future. Molecularly engineered devices, medicines, pigments…etc. are being developed and we are working with our partners to stay ahead of the competition. The following are some of the commercially available products we currently offer: CARBON NANOTUBES NANOPARTICLES NANOPHASE CERAMICS CARBON BLACK REINFORCEMENT for rubber and polymers NANOCOMPOSITES in tennis balls, baseball bats, motorcycles and bikes MAGNETIC NANOPARTICLES for data storage NANOPARTICLE catalytic converters Nanomaterials may be any one of the four types, namely metals, ceramics, polymers or composites. Generally, NANOSTRUCTURES are less than 100 nanometers. In nanomanufacturing we take one of two approaches. As an example, in our top-down approach we take a silicon wafer, use lithography, wet and dry etching methods to construct tiny microprocessors, sensors, probes. On the other hand, in our bottom-up nanomanufacturing approach we use atoms and molecules to build tiny devices. Some of the physical and chemical characteristics exhibited by matter may experience extreme changes as particle size approaches atomic dimensions. Opaque materials in their macroscopic state may become transparent in their nanoscale. Materials that are chemically stable in macrostate may become combustible in their nanoscale and electrically insulating materials may become conductors. Currently the following are among the commercial products we are able to offer: CARBON NANOTUBE (CNT) DEVICES / NANOTUBES: We can visualize carbon nanotubes as tubular forms of graphite from which nanoscale devices can be constructed. CVD, laser ablation of graphite, carbon-arc discharge can be used to produce carbon nanotube devices. Nanotubes are categorized as single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) and multi-walled nanotubes (MWNTs) and can be doped with other elements. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are allotropes of carbon with a nanostructure that can have a length-to-diameter ratio greater than 10,000,000 and as high as 40,000,000 and even higher. These cylindrical carbon molecules have properties that make them potentially useful in applications in nanotechnology, electronics, optics, architecture and other fields of materials science. They exhibit extraordinary strength and unique electrical properties, and are efficient conductors of heat. Nanotubes and spherical buckyballs are members of the fullerene structural family. The cylindrical nanotube usually has at least one end capped with a hemisphere of the buckyball structure. The name nanotube is derived from its size, since the diameter of a nanotube is in the order of a few nanometers, with lengths of at least several millimeters. The nature of the bonding of a nanotube is described by orbital hybridization. The chemical bonding of nanotubes is composed entirely of sp2 bonds, similar to those of graphite. This bonding structure, is stronger than the sp3 bonds found in diamonds, and provides the molecules with their unique strength. Nanotubes naturally align themselves into ropes held together by Van der Waals forces. Under high pressure, nanotubes can merge together, trading some sp2 bonds for sp3 bonds, giving the possibility of producing strong, unlimited-length wires through high-pressure nanotube linking. The strength and flexibility of carbon nanotubes makes them of potential use in controlling other nanoscale structures. Single-walled nanotubes with tensile strengths between 50 and 200 GPa have been produced, and these values are approximately an order of magnitude greater than for carbon fibers. Elastic modulus values are on the order of 1 Tetrapascal (1000 GPa) with fracture strains between about 5% to 20%. The outstanding mechanical properties of the carbon nanotubes makes us use them in tough clothes and sports gear, combat jackets. Carbon nanotubes have strength comparable to diamond, and they are weaved into clothes to create stab-proof and bulletproof clothing. By cross-linking CNT molecules prior to incorporation in a polymer matrix we can form a super high strength composite material. This CNT composite could have a tensile strength on the order of 20 million psi (138 GPa), revolutionizing engineering design where low weight and high strength is required. Carbon nanotubes reveal also unusual current conduction mechanisms. Depending on the orientation of the hexagonal units in the graphene plane (i.e. tube walls) with the tube axis, the carbon nanotubes may behave either as metals or semiconductors. As conductors, carbon nanotubes have very high electrical current-carrying capability. Some nanotubes may be able to carry current densities over 1000 times that of silver or copper. Carbon nanotubes incorporated into polymers improve their static electricity discharge capability. This has applications in automobile and airplane fuel lines and production of hydrogen storage tanks for hydrogen-powered vehicles. Carbon nanotubes have shown to exhibit strong electron-phonon resonances, which indicate that under certain direct current (DC) bias and doping conditions their current and the average electron velocity, as well as the electron concentration on the tube oscillate at terahertz frequencies. These resonances can be used to make terahertz sources or sensors. Transistors and nanotube integrated memory circuits have been demonstrated. The carbon nanotubes are used as a vessel for transporting drugs into the body. The nanotube allows for the drug dosage to be lowered by localizing its distribution. This is also economically viable due to lower amounts of drugs being used.. The drug can be either attached to the side of the nanotube or trailed behind, or the drug can actually be placed inside the nanotube. Bulk nanotubes are a mass of rather unorganized fragments of nanotubes. Bulk nanotube materials may not reach tensile strengths similar to that of individual tubes, but such composites may nevertheless yield strengths sufficient for many applications. Bulk carbon nanotubes are being used as composite fibers in polymers to improve the mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of the bulk product. Transparent, conductive films of carbon nanotubes are being considered to replace indium tin oxide (ITO). Carbon nanotube films are mechanically more robust than ITO films, making them ideal for high reliability touch screens and flexible displays. Printable water-based inks of carbon nanotube films are desired to replace ITO. Nanotube films show promise for use in displays for computers, cell phones, ATMs….etc. Nanotubes have been used to improve ultracapacitors. The activated charcoal used in conventional ultracapacitors has many small hollow spaces with a distribution of sizes, which create together a large surface to store electric charges. However as charge is quantized into elementary charges, i.e. electrons, and each of these needs a minimum space, a large fraction of the electrode surface is not available for storage because the hollow spaces are too small. With electrodes made of nanotubes, the spaces are planned to be tailored to size, with only a few being too large or too small and consequently the capacity to be increased. A solar cell developed uses a carbon nanotube complex, made of carbon nanotubes combined with tiny carbon buckyballs (also called Fullerenes) to form snake-like structures. Buckyballs trap electrons, but they can't make electrons flow. When sunlight excites the polymers, the buckyballs grab the electrons. Nanotubes, behaving like copper wires, will then be able to make the electrons or current flow. NANOPARTICLES: Nanoparticles can be considered a bridge between bulk materials and atomic or molecular structures. A bulk material generally has constant physical properties throughout regardless of its size, but at the nanoscale this is often not the case. Size-dependent properties are observed such as quantum confinement in semiconductor particles, surface plasmon resonance in some metal particles and superparamagnetism in magnetic materials. Properties of materials change as their size is reduced to nanoscale and as the percentage of atoms at the surface becomes significant. For bulk materials larger than a micrometer the percentage of atoms at the surface is very small compared to the total number of atoms in the material. The different and outstanding properties of nanoparticles are partly due to the aspects of the surface of the material dominating the properties in lieu of the bulk properties. For example, the bending of bulk copper occurs with movement of copper atoms/clusters at about the 50 nm scale. Copper nanoparticles smaller than 50 nm are considered super hard materials that do not exhibit the same malleability and ductility as bulk copper. The change in properties is not always desirable. Ferroelectric materials smaller than 10 nm can switch their magnetization direction using room temperature thermal energy, making them useless for memory storage. Suspensions of nanoparticles are possible because the interaction of the particle surface with the solvent is strong enough to overcome differences in density, which for larger particles usually results in a material either sinking or floating in a liquid. Nanoparticles have unexpected visible properties because they are small enough to confine their electrons and produce quantum effects. For example gold nanoparticles appear deep red to black in solution. The large surface area to volume ratio reduces the melting temperatures of nanoparticles. The very high surface area to volume ratio of nanoparticles is a driving force for diffusion. Sintering can take place at lower temperatures, in less time than for larger particles. This should not affect the density of the final product, however flow difficulties and the tendency of nanoparticles to agglomerate can cause issues. The presence of Titanium Dioxide nanoparticles impart a self-cleaning effect, and the size being nanorange, the particles can't be seen. Zinc Oxide nanoparticles have UV blocking properties and are added to sunscreen lotions. Clay nanoparticles or carbon black when incorporated into polymer matrices increase reinforcement, offering us stronger plastics, with higher glass transition temperatures. These nanoparticles are hard, and impart their properties to the polymer. Nanoparticles attached to textile fibers can create smart and functional clothing. NANOPHASE CERAMICS: Using nanoscale particles in the production of ceramic materials we can have simultaneous and major increase in both strength and ductility. Nanophase ceramics are also utilized for catalysis because of their high surface-to-area ratios. Nanophase ceramic particles such as SiC are also used as reinforcement in metals such as aluminum matrix. Automation provides us the advantages of integration, improved product quality and uniformity, reduced cycle-times, reduced labor costs, improved productivity, more economic use of floor space, safer environment for high volume production orders. We are equipped for both SMALL-BATCH PRODUCTION with quantities typically ranging between 10 to 100 pieces as well as MASS PRODUCTION involving quantities over 100,000 pieces. Our mass production facilities are equipped with automation equipment which are dedicated special-purpose machinery. Our facilities can accomodate low and high quantity orders because they operate with a variety of machines in combination and with various levels of automation and computer controls. SMALL-BATCH PRODUCTION: Our job shop personnel for small-batch production is highly skilled and experienced in working on special small quantity orders. Our labor costs are very competitive thanks to our highly skilled large number of workers at our China, South Korea, Taiwan, Poland, Slovakia and Malaysia facilities. Small-batch production has always been and will be one of our major areas of service and complements our automated production processes. Manual small-batch production operations with conventional machine tools does not compete with our automation flowlines, it offers us additional extraordinary capabilities and strength that manufacturers with purely automated production lines do not have. Under no circumstances should the value of small-batch production capabilities of our skilled manually working job shop personnel be underestimated. MASS PRODUCTION: For standardized products in large volumes such as valves, gears and spindles, our production machines are designed for hard automation (fixed-position automation). These are high value modern automation equipment called transfer machines that produce components very fast for pennies a piece in most cases. Our transfer lines for mass production are also equipped with automatic gaging and inspection systems that assure parts produced in one station is within specifications before being transferred to the next station in the automation line. Various machining operations including milling, drilling, turning, reaming, boring, honing…etc. can be performed in these automation lines. We also implement soft automation, which is a flexible and programmable automation method involving computer control of machines and their functions through software programs. We can easily reprogram our soft automation machines to manufacture a part that has a different shape or dimensions. These flexible automation capabilities give us high levels of efficiency and productivity. Microcomputers, PLCs (Programmable Logic Controller), Numerical Control Machines (NC) and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) are widely deployed in our automation lines for mass production. In our CNC systems, an onboard control microcomputer is an integral part of the manufacturing equipment. Our machine operators program these CNC machines. In our automation lines for mass production and even in our small-batch production lines we take advantage of ADAPTIVE CONTROL, where operating parameters automatically adapt themselves to conform to new circumstances, including changes in the dynamics of the particular process and disturbances that may arise. As an example, in a turning operation on a lathe, our adaptive control system does sense in real time the cutting forces, torque, temperature, tool-wear, tool damage and surface finish of the workpiece. The system converts this information into commands that alter and modify process parameters on the machine tool so that the parameters are either held constant within min and max limits or optimized for the machining operation. We deploy AUTOMATION in MATERIAL HANDLING and MOVEMENT. Material handling consists of functions and systems associated with the transportation, storage and control of materials and parts in the total manufacturing cycle of products. Raw materials and parts may be moved from storage to machines, from one machine to another, from inspection to assembly or inventory, from inventory to shipment….etc. Automated material handling operations are repeatable and reliable. We implement automation in material handling and movement for both small-batch production as well as mass production operations. Automation does reduce costs, and is safer for operators, since it eliminates the need to carry materials by hand. Many types of equipment is deployed in our automated material handling and movement systems, such as conveyors, self-powered monorails, AGV (Automated Guided Vehicles), manipulators, integral transfer devices…etc. Movements of automated guided vehicles are planned on central computers to interface with our automated storage/retrieval systems. We use CODING SYSTEMS as part of automation in material handling to locate and identify parts and subassemblies throughout the manufacturing system and to correctly transfer them to appropriate locations. Our coding systems used in automation are mostly bar coding, magnetic strips and RF tags which offer us the advantage of being rewritable and working even if there is no clear line of sight. Vital components in our automation lines are INDUSTRIAL ROBOTS. These are reprogrammable multifunctional manipulators for moving materials, parts, tools, and devices by means of variable programmed motions. Besides moving objects they do also other operations in our automation lines, such as welding, soldering, arc cutting, drilling, deburring, grinding, spray painting, measuring and testing….etc. Depending on the automated production line, we deploy four, five, six and up to seven degrees-of-freedom robots. For high accuracy demanding operations, we deploy robots with closed loop control systems in our automation lines. Positioning repeatabilities of 0.05 mm are common in our robotic systems. Our articulated variable-sequence robots enable human-like complex movements in multiple operation sequences, any of which they can execute given the proper cue like a specific bar code or a specific signal from an inspection station in the automation line. For demanding automation applications, our intelligent sensory robots carry out functions similar to humans in complexity. These intelligent versions are equipped with visual and tactile (touching) capabilities. Similar to humans, they have perception and pattern recognition capabilities and can make decisions. Industrial robots are not limited to our automated mass production lines, whenever needed we deploy them, small-batch production processes inclusively. Without the use of proper SENSORS, robots alone would not be sufficient for the successful operation of our automation lines. Sensors are an integral part of our data acquisition, monitoring, communication and machine control systems. Sensors widely used in our automation lines and equipment are mechanical, electrical, magnetic, thermal, ultrasonic, optical, fiber-optic, chemical, acoustic sensors. In some automation systems, smart sensors with capabilities to perform logic functions, two-way communication, decision-making and action-taking are deployed. On the other hand, some of our other automation systems or production lines deploy VISUAL SENSING (MACHINE VISION, COMPUTER VISION) involving cameras that optically sense objects, process the images, make measurements…etc. Examples where we use machine vision are real-time inspection in sheet metal inspection lines, verification of part placement and fixturing, monitoring of surface finish. Early in-line detection of defects in our automation lines prevents further processing of components and thus limits economic losses to a minimum. The success of automation lines at AGS-TECH Inc. relies heavily of FLEXIBLE FIXTURING. While some of the clamps, jigs and fixtures are being used in our job shop environment manually for small-batch production operations, other workholding devices such as power chucks, mandrels and collets are operated at various levels of mechanization and automation driven by mechanical, hydraulic and electrical means in mass production. In our automation lines and job shop, besides dedicated fixtures we do use intelligent fixturing systems with built-in flexibility that can accommodate a range of part shapes and dimensions without the need of making extensive changes and adjustments. Modular fixturing for example is widely used in our job shop for small-batch production operations to our advantage by eliminating the cost and time of making dedicated fixtures. Complex workpieces can be located into machines through fixtures produced quickly from standard components off our tool store shelves. Other fixtures we deploy throughout our job shops and automation lines are tombstone fixtures, bed-of-nails devices and adjustable-force clamping. We must emphasize that intelligent and flexible fixturing gives us the advantages of lower costs, shorter lead times, better quality in both small-batch production as well as automated mass production lines. An area of great importance for us is of course PRODUCT ASSEMBLY, DISASSEMBLY and SERVICE. We deploy both manual labor as well as automated assembly. Sometimes the total assembly operation is broken into individual assembly operations called SUBASSEMBLY. We offer manual, high-speed automatic and robotic assembly. Our manual assembly operations generally use simpler tools and are popular in some of our small-batch production lines. The dexterity of human hands and fingers offer us unique capabilities in some small-batch complex parts assemblies. Our high-speed automated assembly lines on the other hand use transfer mechanisms designed specially for assembly operations. In robotic assembly, one or multiple general-purpose robots operate at a single or multistation assembly system. In our automation lines for mass production, assembly systems are generally set up for certain product lines. We do however have also flexible assembly systems in automation which can be modified for increased flexibility in case a variety of models is needed. These assembly systems in automation do possess computer controls, interchangeable and programmable workheads, feeding devices and automated guiding devices. In our automation efforts we do always focus on: -Design for fixturing -Design for assembly -Design for disassembly -Design for service In automation the efficiency of disassembly and service are sometimes as important as the efficiency in assembly. The manner and ease with which a product may be taken apart for maintenance or replacement of its parts and serviced is a vital consideration in some product designs. Here are the meanings of abbreviated terms related to display, touchscreen and monitor devices: LED: Light Emitting Diode LCD: Liquid Crystal Display PDP: Plasma Display Panel VFD: Vacuum Fluorescent Display OLED: Organic Light Emitting Diode ELD: Electroluminescent Display SED: Surface-conduction Electron-emitter Display HMD: Head Mounted Display A significant benefit of OLED display over liquid crystal display (LCD) is that OLED does not require a backlight to function. Therefore OLED display draws far less power and, when powered from a battery, can operate longer as compared to LCD. Because there is no need for a backlight, an OLED display can be much thinner than an LCD panel. However, degradation of OLED materials has limited their use as display, touchscreen and monitor. ELD works by exciting atoms by passing an electric current through them, and causing ELD to emit photons. By varying the material being excited, the colour of the emitted light can be changed. ELD is constructed using flat, opaque electrode strips running parallel to each other, covered by a layer of electroluminescent material, followed by another layer of electrodes, running perpendicular to the bottom layer. The top layer must be transparent in order to let light go through and escape. At each intersection, the material lights, thereby creating a pixel. ELDs are sometimes used as backlights in LCDs. They are also useful for creating soft ambient light, and for low-colour, high-contrast screens. A surface-conduction electron-emitter display (SED) is a flat panel display technology that uses surface conduction electron emitters for each individual display pixel. The surface conduction emitter emits electrons that excite a phosphor coating on the display panel, similar to cathode ray tube (CRT) televisions. In other words, SEDs use tiny cathode ray tubes behind every single pixel instead of one tube for the whole display, and can combine the slim form factor of LCDs and plasma displays with the superior viewing angles, contrast, black levels, color definition and pixel response time of CRTs. It is also widely claimed that SEDs consume less power than LCD displays. A head-mounted display or Helmet mounted display, both abbreviated 'HMD', is a display device, worn on the head or as part of a helmet, that has a small display optic in front of one or each eye. A typical HMD has either one or two small displays with lenses and semi-transparent mirrors embedded in a helmet, eye-glasses or visor. The display units are small and may include CRT, LCDs, Liquid Crystal on Silicon, or OLED. Sometimes multiple micro-displays are deployed to increase total resolution and field of view. HMDs differ in whether they can display just a computer generated image (CGI), show live images from the real world or a combination of both. Most HMDs display only a computer-generated image, sometimes referred to as a virtual image. Some HMDs allow superimposing a CGI upon a real-world view. This is sometimes referred to as augmented reality or mixed reality. Combining real-world view with CGI can be done by projecting the CGI through a partially reflective mirror and viewing the real world directly. For partially reflective mirrors, check our page on Passive Optical Components. This method is often called Optical See-Through. Combining real-world view with CGI can also be done electronically by accepting video from a camera and mixing it electronically with CGI. This method is often called Video See-Through. Major HMD applications include military, governmental (fire, police, etc.) and civilian/commercial (medicine, video gaming, sports, etc.). Military, police and firefighters use HMDs to display tactical information such as maps or thermal imaging data while viewing the real scene. HMDs are integrated into the cockpits of modern helicopters and fighter aircraft. They are fully integrated with the pilot's flying helmet and may include protective visors, night vision devices and displays of other symbols and information. Engineers and scientists use HMDs to provide stereoscopic views of CAD (Computer Aided Design) schematics. These systems are also used in the maintenance of complex systems, as they can give a technician an effectively ''x-ray vision'' by combining computer graphics such as system diagrams and imagery with the technician's natural vision. There are also applications in surgery, wherein a combination of radiographic data (CAT scans and MRI imaging) is combined with the surgeon's natural view of the operation. Examples of lower cost HMD devices can be seen with 3D games and entertainment applications. Such systems allow 'virtual' opponents to peek from real windows as a player moves about. Other interesting developments in display, touchscreen and monitor technologies AGS-TECH is interested are: Laser TV: Laser illumination technology remained too costly to be used in commercially viable consumer products and too poor in performance to replace lamps except in some rare ultra-high-end projectors. More recently however, companies demonstrated their laser illumination source for projection displays and a prototype rear-projection ''laser TV''. The first commercial Laser TV and subsequently others have been unveiled. First audiences who were shown reference clips from popular movies reported that they were blown away by a Laser TV's hitherto unseen color-display prowess. Some people even describe it as being too intense to the point of seeming artificial. Some other future display technologies will likely include carbon nanotubes and nanocrystal displays using quantum dots to make vibrant and flexible screens. As always, if you provide us details of your requirement and application, we can design and custom manufacture displays, touchscreens and monitors for you.
